Londoners voted 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin) best new building in the capital, in a poll for the London Architecture Biennale last week. The result was announced on Saturday 17 June, at St Bartholomews Fair, one of the main public events during the first weekend of the week-long celebration of architecture in London.
Developed on the precedents of green architecture for which the practice is renowned, 30 St Mary Axe is the capitals first ecologically progressive skyscraper, and its uncompromising quality has set a benchmark for an emerging generation of tall buildings.
An award for a London Hero was also given jointly to Roger Madelin of Argent and Richard Rogers Urbanism Unit. The public was asked to nominate the individual who has done the most in the past year to improve the quality of the environment in the capital. The winners were then selected by the London Architecture Biennale committee.
London Architecture Biennale will run as part of the 10th Architecture Week www.architectureweek.org.uk
