An immersive career experience for 15–18-year-olds

In 2021, Foster + Partners became an industry partner of InvestIN, a London-based organisation that offers immersive career experiences for students aged between 12–18 years.

Since then, the practice has delivered a number of workshops as part of InvestIN’s ‘Young’ programme, which is designed for students aged 15 –18 years. The programme offers experiences in 18 of the most competitive careers, ranging from architecture to psychology.

This year, Foster + Partners delivered two programmes: The Young Architect Experience and, for the first time, the Young Engineer Experience. Overall, 360 students took part, across four workshops, the highest intake to date. The workshops are designed to inspire, educate and nurture the talent of tomorrow, helping students discover the possibilities of a career in architecture and engineering.

Taking place between July and August, the workshops consisted of an introduction to Foster + Partners, a tour of the London studio, and a Q&A session, followed by a CV building masterclass and a walkthrough of an application process. Students also took part in hands-on activities – from creating domes with structural engineers, to mapping the services in a building with environmental engineers, to axonometric drawing with architects.

Following the workshops, one student commented: “I really liked the Foster + Partners site visit. Not only did it teach me new skills, but it helped me immerse myself in the world of architecture.” Another enjoyed learning about the “inspiring range of jobs available.”

Chuan Lim, Partner and Electrical Engineering, Foster + Partners, said: “It is refreshing to see so many young people interested in engineering – and I was particularly impressed by the lively Q&A sessions with many well-prepared questions about career paths, motivations and skillsets.”

Peter Garstecki, Associate Partner and Education Manager, Foster + Partners, added: “Witnessing the passion and engagement of so many young people who are interested in a career in architecture and engineering is truly amazing. We hope to see them back in our office, in the near future.”
