To mark this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, we hear from those currently taking part in the architectural apprenticeship programme at Foster + Partners. Foster + Partners chaired a Trailblazer Group of 20 architectural practices to create the UK’s first Apprenticeship Standards in Architecture, in collaboration with RIBA, ARB and over a dozen UK universities. Since the approval of the standard in 2018, the practice continues to take on new apprentices on an annual basis.
Our degree apprenticeship provides an alternative and affordable route to an architecture qualification.
“The apprenticeship scheme is the fastest route to becoming a qualified architect. Once the course is complete, you will have a vast amount of experience in a work environment compared to the traditional route. Not to mention, you avoid student debt while earning a salary!” – Valerio, Level 7 (Part 3) Architectural Apprentice
What is an architecture apprenticeship?
An architectural apprenticeship offers an alternative route to becoming an architect, from the tradition degree programme. In England, there are currently two types of architecture apprenticeships:
- Level 6 Architectural Assistant apprenticeship – this is a four-year programme which includes Part 1 qualification
- Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship – this is a four-year programme which includes Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications (taken after Part 1)
“Apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience and jumpstart your career. You are given the chance to start your professional development early through networking, mentorship and learning the latest techniques and technologies.” - Kasia Gryszkiewicz, Level 7 (Part 3) Architectural Apprentice
What does an architect apprenticeship programme entail?
Each apprentice is employed on a full-time basis, with 20% of the contracted time dedicated for studying (for example, one day per week) and 80% contracted to learning ‘on the job’.
The university partner provides ‘off the job’ training, assessment and qualifications while the employer provides opportunities to learn on-the-job and mentoring.
"The methodologies which I have been developing through theoretical research feed directly into my practical work. Naturally, the balance of academic and professional life mandates a sensibility towards time management and organisation." - Jack Rankin, Level 7 (Part 2) Architectural Apprentice
Who can become an architecture apprentice?
Apprenticeships are open to anyone, there is no upper age limit.
For entry into the Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship at Foster + Partners, you must have already obtained your Part 1 and have at least one year of practical experience.
What are the benefits of an architecture apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships combine practical experience in the workplace with academic training delivered by a university or other training provider. Apprentices are exempt from paying tuition fees and receive a competitive salary and other employee related benefits.
“Throughout my apprenticeship I have learnt that communication is the most valuable skill, when working as part of a team. By engaging with my colleagues at every opportunity, my work can evolve through their feedback.” - Alex Szal, Level 6 (Part 1) Architectural Assistant Apprentice
