The 10th RIBA Stirling Prize in association with The Architects Journal, took place at a televised award ceremony at the Royal Museum, Edinburgh, Saturday 15 October. Foster and Partners McLaren Technology Centre - one of 6 buildings on the Stirling Shortlist - was voted the 'people's choice' by Channel 4 viewers, picking up almost 30% of the vote. The announcement came just prior to the main prize, which this year went to The Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh.
At the same ceremony, The Sage Gatehead won this years RIBA Inclusive Design Award in association with the Centre for Accessible Environments and Allgood. The award celebrates inclusivity in building design, and demonstrates that good design results in environments that are safe, convenient and enjoyable to use by people, regardless of disability, age or gender.
The Inclusive Design Award judges - Sarah Langton-Lockton, Mike Hield and Tony Chapman said: This is a significant building on a sumptuous site, The Sage Gateshead is a highly successful expression of the inclusive design objective, which is to create environments which offer choice and equality of experience for all users.The Sage Gateshead has made genuine advances in the understanding of and delivery of accessibility for all and is an exciting winner of the RIBA Inclusive Design.
