Foster + Partners has been working on projects in Shenzhen for over ten years. In 2018, the practice opened an office at the centre of the city’s Nanshan District to provide a personalised service for local clients, while facilitating the design and construction of new buildings in the region. The studio is located on the 17th floor of the China Resources Land Building, Tower B. This is one of four towers designed by Foster + Partners as part of a redevelopment of Dachong, with the fifth housing the China Resources Land new headquarters and a 5 Star Hotel now under construction.
Grant Brooker, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “We have enjoyed a long and rewarding relationship with Shenzhen, a city known for its high energy and ambition. Given its enormous scale, we are proud that our many projects here – ranging from our commercial, mixed-use developments to our more bespoke projects such as DJI Sky City and China Merchants Bank – have all played their part in its continuing growth and success.”
Projects that are currently under construction include China Merchants Bank, a new global headquarters and urban complex for the organisation in the Shenzhen Bay Area, and Qianhai Talents’ Apartments, a residential building that has been designed for young professionals. The practice is also working on developing urban strategies for the city, prioritising a sustainable, well-connected urban realm in Guangming that is generated by the needs of people. Their development of Xiao Jing Wan, just outside Shenzhen, was recently completed.
Foster + Partners has completed a range of projects within Shenzhen. This includes the Nanshan Technology Finance City in Dachong (where the office is located); an integrated mixed-use community at the centre of the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park: SANY Cloud City, the new headquarters for one of the largest construction equipment manufacturers in the world; and most recently, DJI Sky City, the new headquarters for the world’s leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology.
Alex Qian, Partner, Foster + Partners, said: “Shenzhen is a unique place to live and work, due to its young population and entrepreneurial spirit. The practice continues to learn from and contribute to this ever-evolving city, overlaying our own technological tools and design expertise to enhance the urban environment.”
