The Sage Gateshead exhibited at the 2004 Venice Biennale

The Sage Gateshead is on display at the ninth Architecture Exhibition at the 2004 Venice Biennale. The chosen theme of this years exhibition, 'Metamorph,' illustrates the profound changes in architectural form-making that have occurring since the advent of sophisticated computer modelling software.

The Sage Gateshead is included in a display of 40 concert halls housed in the Italian Pavilion. This section of the Biennale celebrates the architecture of music performance, and includes such celebrated modern concert halls as Jorn Utzon's winning 1955 design for the Sydney Opera House. Also on display is Le Corbusier's Phillips Pavilion, from the 1958 Brussels World Fair, and Frank O Gehry's new Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

The new music centre at Gateshead officially opens this December. Its distinctive free-flowing form is already a landmark on Tyneside. A regional centre of international standing with an expected half a million visitors each year, the Gateshead contributes to the regeneration of the river frontage.

The Venice Biennale is on until 7th November 2004.
